Red 40: The Dye in Your Food That's Also Used in Fabric

Let's start with what they don't put on the label.

Red 40 — officially called Allura Red AC — was synthesized from petroleum. Not berries. Not beets. Petroleum. The same crude oil that gets refined into gasoline and plastic also gave us the red color in your kid's fruit snacks, your sports drink, your strawberry yogurt, and your cherry pie filling. It is one of the most widely used food dyes in the United States and most people have never once questioned where it came from.

The dye was introduced in the 1970s as a replacement for Red 2, which was banned over cancer concerns. So they swapped one problematic dye for another and called it progress. Red 40 went on to become a staple of the American food supply — cheap, stable, and convincingly red.

What it actually does in your body

The FDA says it's safe. They've said that since 1971. What they don't broadcast is that their own research — along with independent studies — has linked Red 40 to hyperactivity and behavioral issues in children. The UK took that seriously enough to require warning labels on any food containing it. The label has to say: "may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children."

The US requires no such label.

The European Food Safety Authority has flagged it for further review multiple times. Several countries have moved to phase it out of children's food entirely. Here, it's still in Skittles, Kool-Aid, Jell-O, Lucky Charms, Doritos, and hundreds of other products marketed directly to kids. The parents buying those products have no idea. That's not an accident — that's a policy decision.

Some researchers have also noted connections between synthetic food dyes and allergic reactions, including hives, itching, and in rare cases, anaphylaxis. Red 40 is derived from coal tar and petroleum distillates, and for people with sensitivities to those compounds, the reaction can be immediate and severe.

The contamination problem nobody talks about

Red 40 is manufactured through a chemical synthesis process that leaves behind known contaminants — including benzidine and 4-aminobiphenyl. Both are recognized carcinogens. The FDA permits trace levels of these contaminants in the final dye, operating under the assumption that the amount is too small to cause harm.

That assumption has never been proven. It's just the assumption they made.

What makes this worse is that Red 40 is not consumed in isolation. It is in hundreds of products. A child eating Lucky Charms for breakfast, drinking Kool-Aid at lunch, and eating Skittles after school has consumed Red 40 three times in one day — three separate doses of a petroleum-derived dye with known contaminants at levels the FDA considers acceptable. Nobody has studied what that cumulative daily exposure looks like over years. They just keep approving it.

It's not just food

The same molecule used to make your food red is also used to dye textiles, cosmetics, and craft supplies. When a fabric manufacturer uses it, it comes with handling precautions and material safety data sheets. Workers are advised to avoid prolonged skin contact. When a food manufacturer uses it, it comes with nothing — just a line in the ingredients list that most people scroll past without a second thought.

That contrast should bother you. The same compound. Two completely different levels of caution depending on whether it goes on fabric or inside a five-year-old.

Where it hides

Red 40 shows up in places that don't even look red. It's used in combination with other dyes to create orange, brown, and purple shades. That means it can be in your chocolate pudding, your grape juice, your granola bar, and your kids' vitamins without ever triggering suspicion. Food manufacturers are not required to disclose which specific dyes create which colors — they just have to list them somewhere in the ingredients.

Always check the label. If you see "Red 40," "Allura Red," or "FD&C Red No. 40" — it's the same thing.

Why it's still here

The simple answer is that removing it costs money. Red 40 is inexpensive, it's consistent, and it makes food look more appealing than it actually is. Without it, your strawberry yogurt would be a pale grayish pink. Your sports drink would look like dirty water. The color is doing marketing work — it makes the product look fresher, more vibrant, and more flavorful than it is. Taking it out means reformulating, rebranding, and spending more on natural alternatives like beet juice, paprika extract, or carmine.

Some companies have done exactly that — mostly in their European product lines where regulations forced their hand. The same brand will sell a version with natural coloring in the UK and a version with Red 40 in the US. Same product. Different standards depending on what the government requires.
