- "sugar" — including the brown and specialty spellings.
Then do the one thing the manufacturer is hoping you won't: count how many different sugars appear in a single list. One is normal. Three or four scattered through the ingredients is the splitting tactic in action — and it tells you that if those sugars were combined into one line, it would likely have sat at or near the very top.

An honest note on what these names do and don't mean
We don't inflate certainty here, so two clarifications the loudest versions of this topic skip:
These sugars are not all nutritionally identical. The claim on this page is narrow and settled: they are all added sugar, and splitting them across names disguises the total. The separate, hotly debated question of whether, say, HFCS is meaningfully worse than table sugar gram-for-gram is genuinely less clear-cut than the internet suggests — the body treats them similarly in many respects. Don't let anyone sell you a panic that outruns the evidence.
*Maltodextrin is the fair exception. By strict chemistry it's a polysaccharide, not a sugar, and it can appear in "no sugar" products legally. But it spikes blood glucose as fast as or faster than table sugar, which is why it belongs on your radar even though it escapes the "sugar" label. It's the cleanest example of the whole problem: technically-not-sugar, functionally-very-much-sugar.
That distinction — between what a word is allowed to say and what the thing actually does — is the entire skill. Sugar is just where it's easiest to see.
