What it is
A synthetic antioxidant from the same family as BHA, prized for protecting frying oils and fatty processed foods. It's the quiet preservative inside instant noodles, snack crackers, and a surprising amount of the fast-food fryer.
Why it's in food
Oils that get heated, held, and reheated break down fast; TBHQ keeps them stable through abuse no natural antioxidant tolerates as cheaply. For shelf-stable fried and fatty foods, it's the industry default.

FDA-approved — with a built-in confession: the law caps TBHQ at 0.02% of a food's oil and fat content, one of the tightest ceilings any additive carries. High-dose rodent studies produced tumors (again in the forestomach), and newer laboratory work has raised questions about immune effects that regulators reviewed without changing course. European Union
Permitted as E319 with a low daily intake set in 2004. The hard no comes from Japan, which doesn't allow TBHQ at all — American snacks have been stopped at its border over it. Between Washington's 0.02% and Tokyo's zero sits an unresolved judgment call.

It's a potency confession written into the approval: regulators judged TBHQ safe only in tiny amounts, so the law caps it at two-hundredths of a percent of a food's fat. Most additives don't carry a ceiling like that. The cap isn't the scandal — it's the acknowledgment that a line exists at all.
Is TBHQ banned anywhere?
Japan doesn't permit it — full stop — and has rejected imported American products over it. The EU allows it with a conservative daily limit. Same data, three doors: capped in the US, capped tighter in Europe, closed in Japan.
Does TBHQ harm the immune system?
